NFL Holdings is a private company once owned by descendents of the four families who originally founded the business in 1941. Today, NFL Holdings is a subsidiary of Atlantic Ferries Holdings Limited, a company owned by senior management. The founding principles of safety, efficiency, quality, community and innovation remain the cornerstone of our corporate philosophy today. NFL was incorporated in 1939 in Halifax and commenced operating the Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island to Caribou, Nova Scotia ferry service in 1941. This company has continued eight month per year operational contract with Transport Canada to this date. For over 60 years, we have continuously provided safe and reliable ferry services between Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. Bay expanded to the Bay of Fundy in 1997 having been chosen as the successful proponent to take over the Bay of Fundy services previously operated by Marine Atlantic following a formal Request for Proposals process conducted by the Government of Canada in which local and international companies participated. The Saint John - Digby service has been operated year round since 1997 with the mv Princess of Acadia which was recently the subject of an extensive renovation. The Princess of Acadia is a conventional ferry which serves a combination of local, touring and commercial truck traffic. Between 1998 and 2009, Bay operated one of the largest and most sophisticated high-speed ferries in the world between Yarmouth and Maine. Bay has operated a number of other services in North America and the Caribbean since 1999. Another subsidiary of NFL Holdings, Bay Ferries Management Limited, currently manages the high speed ferry service of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, by far the most successful and highest volume high speed ferry business of its kind in the Caribbean. Our companies operate and maintain ferries, ensuring they meet the highest standards of safety and environmental protection. This work is accomplished by a small, but capable, multi-functional management team, assisted by more than 300 direct employees and the strategic use of specialized sub-contractors. Our group of companies is recognized throughout North America, and internationally, as an efficient, competent and innovative ferry service provider. |
